Resident Evil 3 is the latest installment in the best zombie games franchise out there. You don’t need this Resident Evil 3 review to tell you that this isn’t really an entirely new game. As you already know, this is actually a complete remake of one of the classic titles in the series.
This game brings us back to a new interpretation of what survival horror really means in gaming. Similar to what they did with Resident Evil 2 recently, they updated the graphics and gameplay, to make it fit for a modern audience.
This remake we received last year was immediately listed among the best zombie survival games out there. So with such success, it’s natural to think they’d be able to do it again right? Well, let’s begin with the spoiler-free Resident Evil 3 review.
A New Take
The basic idea of making a remake is to update an already existing game for the modern times, but sometimes that-s not enough. This time Resident Evil 3 did the same thing as last year’s Resident Evil 2 in that they completely updated the game.
Starting off with a completely new prologue scene, Resident Evil 3 already seems like it’s going to be among the best zombie games around. Amazing looks, incredible cinematography, a technical masterpiece. The narrative of this game kicks off is sure to shake you up a lot.
But even from those first moments, you realize how this game seems to lean in a different direction. The action and thriller elements outnumber the horror aspects of the game even from early on. Similar to the transition we saw on the series back with Resident Evil 4.
The game adds up a lot of new content to help with the missing links in the series. Even from the first moments, we get to see a connection between where Resident Evil 2 left off and where this game starts. If you can play Resident Evil 2 again right before starting this one it would be great to freshen up your memory a bit.
Still, keep in mind that by saying that this game leans more to be an action game it doesn’t mean that’s all there is to it. Resident Evil 3 Proves to understand what makes the series great and adds just enough elements of survival horror.
Resident Evil 3 Review – Playability
Since Resident Evil 3 is more of an action game than a direct horror game, playability is pretty important here. The series has come a long way since the days of standing still to aim. The characters move fluidly and fast through the levels with nice and responsive controls.
The commands are easy to understand and master, so you should worry about shooting the zombies and monsters up. And as usual, be careful not to die.
There are multiple scenarios where we are left with plenty of ammo to face the hordes of enemies that are coming our way, and it’s up to us to stay alive. The constant threat of Nemesis throughout the whole game also adds up to the intense feeling of this whole game. The game makes great use of the controllers, so not only it feels like one of the best zombie games on the PS4, but it’s also one of the best zombie games for the Xbox One. And the most stunning of them all, one of the best zombie games PC.
Resident Evil 3 Review – Visuals
The visual aspect of this game is probably one of the first things everyone notices. The game looks gorgeous and horrible in a good way. The character models are incredibly detailed at every level, from their facial expressions to their hair and clothing. The scenarios look incredibly realistic, but it doesn’t miss the artistic direction.
Since they built this game from the ground up, all enemies, characters, and scenery are completely redesigned. And this time, this leaves mixed feelings and a little controversy among the fans.
There are more purist fans that prefer the original designs of some characters and monsters. It really doesn’t matter where you stand in this spectrum, there’s no denying they did an amazing job in the visual elements of this game.
There are plenty of enemies that completely changed from what they used to be. Not only as an upgrade for the game but also to create more enemy diversity. They included new horrible enemies that will definitely scare you up. It doesn’t even matter that you have more than enough ammo to get out alive. Just the fact of being followed by these monsters is enough to scare you off.
The lighting effects are amazing by themselves, but when applied to the incredibly detailed models, it’s simply amazing. It’s hard to find a game that looks like this, let alone a horror game.
Resident Evil 3 is definitely one of the best zombie survival games. Even though these may not technically be zombies, it’s still amazing. TO think that they deliver this amazing title only one year after Resident Evil 2 is ridiculous.
It’s superior to the original game in pretty much every single aspect. But this comes at a cost. This game is really into being an action game, and that can be a pretty negative point for many fans of the series.
Still, with all that, this title looks, plays and feels amazing to play. It doesn’t have a mercenary Mercenaries mode included, but there’s a multiplayer mode in there. We didn’t mention this before because it’s simply not up to the level of the rest of the game. But it’s still a nice touch to include something like these, even when they didn’t really have to.
Aside from it being too much of an action game, there’s another negative thing worth mentioning about Resident Evil 3.
It’s really, really short.
Short enough that you can finish your first playthrough of the game in about 5 hours or less.
That’s really bad considering just how good this game is. But the positive thing about that is that you can finish it up in just one seat!
If you are a fan of the series and really liked the 2019 Resident Evil 2 then you MUST play Resident Evil 3, it’s really one of the best zombie games you can play right now.
